I guess I am on Aaron Walls mailing list because I just got an email from him(Probably from buying his SEO book). He mentioned that he will be finished updating his famous SEO book in several days and in his email also included some goodies such as the following which I though I would share with you…
A video offering tips on how to install and use SEO for Firefox
8 other short SEO videos yesterday, and uploaded them to YouTube here
By the way, I got a chance to meet Aaron at a conference here in the Philippines. I didn’t get a chance to talk to him much, but he seems like a really nice guy.
July 11th, 2005 — 1990s, Review, book, decline, gladwell, mouth, point, tipping, word
I recently finished reading the book The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell. In the book Gladwell discussed the many factors that cause trends and certain changes in society to occur. The point where a trend or change really begins to take off is what Gladwell refers to as “The Tipping Point.” Some examples that Gladwell used in the book are the rise in poplularity of Hush Puppies in the mid 1990s and the decline in crime rates in New York City in the 1990s.
One part of the book that really interested me was Gladwells discussion of the phenomenon of word of mouth. There are usually only a relatively few amount of people that are truly responsible for spreading word of mouth epidemics. Gladwell classifies these people into three categories: Mavens, who are very knowledgeable people and therefore are listened to by their peers; Connectors, who know a lot of people from many different social circles; And Salesmen, who have a way of converting people to their point of view. If a company really wanted to get their name and product know their time would be well spend focusing a large amount of their time and efforts on finding and marketing to these individuals.
May 30th, 2005 — Review, attitude, book, books, fundingutah, killer, knowledge, lovecat, sanders
I recently finished reading a book by Tim Sanders called Love Is The Killer App. It is an awesome book, and I would encourage everyone to read it. In the book Sanders advocates becoming a Lovecat, someone who is helpful and loving to everyone. Sanders outlines three things we should do to become a Lovecat, gain knowledge, network, and show compassion. We should do more than just be nice to people. We should share our knowledge and network freely to help them out. That’s what being a Lovecat is all about, adding value to lives of others just because you want to help, without a thought of any compensation.
While I was reading the book there were many times that I would say to myself “Cool, that’s what I already do”, then as I read on I would find out things I wasn’t doing that I thought would be a good idea to implement. Such as when Sandbers talks about knowledge. He said we should be constantly gaining new knowledge by always reading new books, which is something I’ve done pretty much my whole life. Sanders then goes on to say that we should share our knowledge with others who we think can benefit from it, which is something that I haven’t really done very much. I have kind of been selfish with my knowledge in the past, so this is something I can work on.
Just last week I went to the first ever Business Ignitor Series event to take place in Utah County. Paul Allen gave a speech where he said he grew up with a negative attitude towards entrepreneurs and businessmen. He said that reading Love Is The Killer App helped change his attitude. He realized how much good he could do in the world by being an Entrepreneur. A few weeks ago at a press conference for the launch of FundingUtah.com, Paul Allen was asked how he planned on making money from FundingUtah.com. His instant reply was “Don’t know. Don’t care.” His first priority was not to make money, but to help others. He is a true Lovecat.
