The Evolution of the Internet Machine

I thought this was and amazing video, so I am sharing it with you. It goes over the history of the internet from basic digital text and html to the various web 2.0 technologies and websites we see today.

Internet Headlines of 2007

What lies ahead in the Internet World in 2007? Below are my three predictions of Headlines we will see during the coming year along with my justification for such predictions.

Google Buys Digg for $200 Million
Despite much criticism recently, Digg continues to grow. Google does not currently own a site like Digg, so Digg would fit nicely into their portfolio. Digg doesn’t receive quite the amount of traffic as YouTube, which Google paid $1.65 billion for earlier this year, so it doesn’t merit such a large price tag, but I think that within the next year Google will be willing to pay at least as much as Digg is asking for.

Wikipedia article count reaches 6 million
With a count currently just above 4 million and growing steadily, Wikipedia’s article count should reach 6 million by years end.

Firefox Surpasses Internet Explorer’s Market Share
Okay, I don’t really think this will happen especially considering IE will be the default browser on many computers which will operate on Microsoft’s new Windows Vista, but I think it would be cool. Even though it is not likely, it is possible. The browser wars in 2007 will be interesting either way.

What is Web 2.0?

I have heard the term Web 2.0 used several times over the past several months. I kind of gathered what it meant from the context in which the term was being used. However, it was only until the last couple weeks that I actually took the time to do some research to get a concrete definition on what the term really meant. I found out that the there really is no concrete definition for the term. From what I read I learned that Web 2.0 refers to the second wave of internet innovation. There are several characteristics that distinguish Web 2.0 from the bubble days of the late 90s.

Web 1.0 was a static web where websites would provide information and surfers would consume it. However, Web 2.0 is a more dynamic and functional web, with a greater emphasis on user generated content and social networking, where everyday surfers actually participate in creating the web. This is acomplished with newly popularized technologies such as blogging, wikis, rss, padcasting, and AJAX. This all pretty exciting stuff. I am look forward with enthusiasm to the future of the internet.

Domain Registration and Web Hosting

For those of you who would like to know which company I use to register domain names I use GoDaddy.com. I would recommend their services to anyone who needs to register a domain name. As for web hosting I have my own reseller account which I use for all my domains, but from what I’ve seen GoDaddy has really good web hosting plans. Another hosting option which is worth looking into is cPanel hosting by v7 inc. I have also heard good things about Bluehost, which I used for a while in the past. They have great customer service, but having a limit of only 6 domains per account is what caused me to try to find another solution(I have far more than just 6 sites). If you need any further help with hosting or setting up a site please don’t hesitate to ask me for assistance. I love to help.

Internet Archive

I came across an interesting website today, Internet Archive. It is a huge digital archive. What interested me the most was a tool called WayBackMachine, which allows you to search for archives of old websites. It was interesting to see how sites like Yahoo, Google, and Ebay looked in the past. Some of the sites looked very simple and amaturish compared to today’s web design standards. Here is a link to a screenshot of how Yahoo looked back in 1996.

Interactive Banner Ads

I’ve noticed quite a few interactive banner ads out there recently, usually where you try to shoot something. I usually don’t click on banner ads but in the last two weeks I participated in three of these interactive banner ads then was redirected to the advertising website. I just did it out of curiosity mostly. I didn’t end up buying or signing up for anything but the banner ads did get my attention, so maybe there are people out there who do end up buying something from these advertisers that wouldn’t have even clicked on a traditional banner ad.

Alexa and Search Engines

I was excited this morning to find that my Alexa ranking for chrissandberg.com had jumped to 1,434,804. It had previously been over 5,000,000. Alexa started crawling my site a couple weeks ago and from what I understand it takes a couple months to get an accurate ranking, and even then it isn’t that accurate unless your site is in the top 100,000. Apparently I do have a little traffic to my site which is surprising considering I haven’t told many people about my website.

A few search engines also started crawling my website a couple weeks ago and I’m proud to say I am now listed as #3 in Yahoo for the keyword “Chris Sandberg.” That really isn’t saying much since I know not many people will be searching for that, but It’s nice to know that If someone were looking for me they would be able to find me. I still have not been crawled by google so I’m not listed there yet. However, the website for Vire Design(a web development company I’m starting) is listed as #1 for the keywords “Vire Design” in both Yahoo and Google. Hopefully we can get listed high for some keywords that people actually use.
