I know from past conversations that we have different political views, but we have never had a conversation quite like this one.
Although I have pretty well defined political views I don’t really fully support any one party, but I’d say the one party that reflects my views the most accurately is the Libertarian Party. Although my political ideology is defiantly Libertarian I am always a bit hesitant to support the Libertarain Party because It seems sometimes that my time would be better spent supporting candidates from one of the two major political parties, since a third party is will almost never gain enough support to put any of their candidates in office and make any difference. Despite this hesitation I have voted Libertarian in the past and was really exited to participate in a meeting at BYU discussing the possibility of organizing a Libertarian Club at BYU.

I mentioned this meeting to my friend who first explained why he doesn’t agree with Libertarianism, then went on to say that anyone who supports a third party is just labeling themselves as a crazy radical since the two major parties encompass most of the middle ground where “normal” people stand. I had just minutes earlier expressed my enthusiasm for organizing a Libertarian club at BYU and mentioned that I had voted Libertarian in the past so this friends remarks seemed to imply that I was a crazy radical.

I felt a bit alieneted by my friends remarks but really thought about what he said. My friend seemed to be arguing that one should support one of the two major political parties so that you don’t appear too out of the ordinary and aren’t labeled as a crazy radical. I decided that other people’s view of me didn’t matter as much as supporting what I truly believe in, and I wouldn’t back down from what I believed in because It would make me appear strange or even crazy. So I guess I am a crazy radical, but you know what? I don’t mind.
